UXO720 - Week 6 - Reading Week
I’ve come to appreciate these reading weeks as a way to catch up on items I haven’t had a chance to work on and focus on more academic research and reading.
This week I’ve primarily focused on catching up with my prototype and journal articles since I fell behind after catching COVID-19!
A few academic items I have been reading related to this course and my project:
-
A review of the environmental implications of B2C e-commerce: a logistics perspective
-
Environmental Impacts of the Emerging Digital Economy: The E-for-Environment E-Commerce?
-
Organizational and Environmental Factors with the Mediating Role of E-Commerce and SME Performance
What I’ve Learned
After spending quite a bit of time reviewing the various articles on e-commerce and potential environmental impacts, I’ve learned that there has not been a lot of academic work done in looking at the direct impacts of e-commerce and the environment. It seems as if we are still in the early days of recognizing these items are related and should be looked at in more detail.
Additionally, I’m learning that there does not appear to be any type of standard metrics that anyone can agree on in terms of how to measure environmental impact. Some groups will talk about carbon footprint, or CO2 output, and others will use global hectares as a way to understand production impact. This has become a concern in my prototype as MIV still is not clear on which metrics they would like to use.
E-commerce
E-commerce is its own sector of the design world, with a wide range of opinions and statistics on how design should be approached. I spent a bit more time exploring some e-commerce ideas on Dribbble and Behance this week as well. One site I liked was: . The bold colors and branding around, what I would consider a boring product, was very interesting.
