Slow Focus

Personal

I'm learning to move slow. As part of being a startup founder, I've tended to move quickly and break things. Which usually is fine in a small startup team, but doesn't always work in a more traditional team. Now that I am away from my company for the next year, I am trying to be intentional about embracing slow focus as a life focus.

Now, I don't mean slow in terms of work production. At work, I work hard. But what I mean by slow focus is to spend more time to focus on quality and enjoy the moments.

I spent a significant part of my startup journey creating a pace that just couldn't be maintained. It left me depressed and burnt out. Now I am recovering and fighting every urge in me to try and move too quickly. We can't sustain that typeof work long term.

My new focus is savouring the moments I have. Time at work, the people I work with, time with my family, and friends, are all things I want to focus on enjoying.

I've always hated the terms "hustle" and "grind" to describe the mindset needed for startup founders. While it's true you need to work hard. I would suggest for new founders to focus on the journey. Each startup is unique, each path is different, so take time to enjoy it.
